Bird facts

The Moa is an interesting bird because it was hunted by the Maori people and the moa can't fly because it is flightless. The Moa is a native bird to New Zealand.-Alec

I learnt that the Moa is 3 meters tall.I also learnt that a Kakapo is a flightless bird and camouflage in trees and shrubs to defend themselves from predators.Birds can fake an injury to defend themselves and there children as well.A bird that has always been in New Zealand and found no where else is called an endemic bird.-Bonnie

I learnt that Moa are related to the Kiwi . Some birds are native they are found in other countries some birds are Endemic so they have always been in New Zealand and some  birds were self introduced  so they swam or flew here. Zoe.

I learnt that the Hasst Eagle was extinct because the Moa its prey was hunted by the Maori to e

The eastern rosella lays six eggs a once!Maxim

I learnt that the Takahe were thought to be extinct in 1948. Then a person named Dr Geoffrey had rediscovered the Takahe in lake Te Anau in Fiordland but they only found a few Takahe. They call it Takahe valley. The North island Takahe is extinct but South island still have about 220 Takahe. David

I learnt that the female Moa was 3 metres tall and it sounded like a light saber.Toby

Facinating bird facts

Today at school we had a bird museum session.
We learnt that......

Moas
-They made a lightsaber noise.
-The female Moa was 3 metres tall and the male was about 1 metre tall.

Predators:

-Haast eagles claws were the size of a Tigers paws. Cadence.

The Haast's eagles wings are about 3 metres long. That must be huge!
Their targets were Moa, Kiwi and Kakapo. Caitlin.

the haast eagle stabs its prey with its claws. the prey bleeds to death .  Isaiah .

My bird fact is that a duck has webbed feet and swims in water  the shag has webbed and claw feet so the shag can go in the water and trees .

My inquiry that I'm going to find out about is what a Moa  fed its baby on.I know that the male it was about 1 metre tall and a female was about 3 metres tall ..Mikayla.

My bird fact is the maori people went hunting for moas more than kiwis because moas had more meat on them than kiwis and it would feed about 10 people for weeks and kiwis would feed 1 person for the day and they'd have to go out everyday to everyday.by Chloe

My bird fact is that Ostriches don't make nests but they still lay eggs, on the ground, so did the moa bird. They have to be careful when the female has eggs because they can't fly then. By Breanna.

My fact is  that birds have different feet because of there habitat like ducks they have  webbed feet  so they can swim in water. Magpies have claws because they can live on trees.

My bird fact is that the hasst eagle  kills its  prey swooping down at 50 km per hour , they can kill a prey from up to 250kgs.By Harry!!!

I have leant that a kiwi sets in the water when the egg is in the mums body it sets in the water to take the wieght from caring the egg.by CALEB.

snow stories

In the snow my brother and I started to make an igloo but  it is not finished. There are two kinds of igloos the walrus or sealshik tents of summer and hut houses for winter . Igloos are made of blocks of snow. Mikayla

My brother  and I made so many snow men it wasn't funny. we made 2 snow men and 7 snow women.
do you know that snow can turn from rain to snow and back again -it depends on the temperature. Harry!!!!!
My brother and I noticed that the sleet has 6 branches if you look at it very closly. In the snow people build igloos and snow men to have fun in when it is snowing.caleb.

More snow!!!!!!!

Can you believe it!!! More snow - but the poor birds.

We put out a plate with some wheat on and it was really interesting watching the different birds come on to our deck to feed because their food supply was covered by the snow.
Here is one of our pigeons, a wild duck and a sparrow.

Think about the different features of these 3 birds. Why are their feet shaped like they are? Where do they live? How do they normally feed - when there is no snow?Do they all have the same body shape and size?

My suggestion is that you go to Snow Park because they have loads  of  diffrent grinds and huge jumps they also have a restaurant and bar and yes they have
acommodation.By Harry.

I think people should visit your family or go on holiday. I said this so people can have more fun than staying at  home playing PlayStation or watching TV.Grace

I suggest that if you are trapped inside do some baking at home with your
mum or dad or mabe you stay at your aunties and uncles or possibly your nana and grandad's - Chloe

In the holidays I went to Timaru and went to the movies and chipmunks. I think other people Should go to Timaru and stay at Timaru top10 holiday park because you can hire little bikes. When I was there it was really fun .My family also went out for lunch it had a play area for kids  it had a pit fall of  balls in it.It is  really  fun.-MIKAYLA

I think you should go to Hanmer Springs with your family to have family time and after go to a restaurant to eat and enjoy the evening! My family drove there and it was a very enjoyable evening.I really liked going in the hot pools!-Bonnie

I think people should try doing filming of your own sometime and then send it to the what now crew and be a moviestar because it is really fun to do and the website is http://www.whatnow.tv/ whitebait T.V-Alec

I think people should rug up in a scarf, a pair of gloves, a woolly hat and a big jacket and go outside! Make a snowman! Have a snowball fight! So get outside
for the school holidays.Caitlin.

I think in the holidays you should try to go to the movies and play basketball and maybe go for a walk.sam

I think you should try to do the gnome grotto for kidsfest http://www.kidsfest.co.nz/ and it is cool because it is for free at the botanical gardens you can get a map for free it takes about 30-40 minutes. There are cool water fountains a long the way and a really cool surprise at the end  (you must do them in order).Sven

I  think you should try go out to a camp its really fun plus you get to do
lots of things. I went to Boys  camp but when I got home it snowed
lots it was so thick we made a snow man and had a snow ball fight.Dion
